Date for Your Student Diary – Liverpool Mathew Street Festival
Just as you thought this year’s music festivals were coming to a close, we have one last heavy hitter for you – Europe’s largest free annual music festival and it’s right here on your doorstep! The Mathew Street Festival, now in it’s 19th year will take place this weekend 28th & 29th August, and promises to be bigger and better than ever. The festival will see 200,000 visitors arrive in the city, plus bands and musicians from over 30 different countries around the world. For Liverpool’s students it’s a perfect opportunity to relax and enjoy one last summer festival before term starts, within staggering distance of your own bed, and all for free!
The Mathew Street Festival comprises of 6 outdoor live stages and over 40 indoor venues, all of which will be open to the public free of charge and will feature some of the best artists and tribute acts that the world has to offer. A full line up of performers and events, and list of venues can be viewed on the official Mathew Street Festival website.
This year will see a new and exclusive VIP area added to the festival. The marquee will be situated on the Victoria Street car park site and offer “complimentary drinks and snacks, comfy sofas, free hair and make-up repairs, private loos and live entertainment,” all for £25 per ticket. Also a first for this year will be the sale of the new Mathew Street ‘Band Together’ wristbands which will not only make a nice little souvenir from the events but will also entitle festival goers to some great offers and discounts at 15 top shops, restaurants and bars in Liverpool. At £3 a pop the wristbands are a bargain and the hope is that purchases of the bands will help to part fund the huge festival and keep it free for many years to come.
As always we’re hoping for the sun, to get some final use out of our sun hats and shorts, but either way, with such a vast choice of indoor and outdoor venues the festival will definately give our city an exciting musical buzz this weekend, so go along and enjoy.
